Nokian Tyres SilentDrive Technology: Meet the Special Foam We Use to Decrease EV Road Noise

Without booming internal combustion engines, electric vehicles deliver a nearly silent driving experience. We say “nearly,” because the loudest sound EV drivers hear is often the friction between tires and the road. Read about our solution.

Electric vehicles are making noise in the automotive market. One reason they’re so popular? They’re quiet on the road.

That means EV tires need to deliver as quiet a ride as possible. Otherwise, drivers are simply replacing one noise for another.

Enter Nokian Tyres. As the inventor of the winter tire, we’re always focused on new innovations that make driving safer and more comfortable. After years of testing our tires on electric vehicles, we’ve devised a solution to help reduce cabin volume: an acoustic foam that reduces the noise frequencies that are most prominent to drivers.

We call it SilentDrive Technology.

What Nokian Tyres products have SilentDrive Technology?

SilentDrive Technology is available in our dedicated EV winter tires: the studded Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 EV and non-studded Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta R5 EV.

How does SilentDrive Technology work?

The foam rests between the tire and the rim. It absorbs sound from vibrations created when a tire makes contact with the road. Nokian Tyres calibrated the foam to reduce sound frequencies the ear is most likely to hear.

And according to one electric vehicle expert, it makes winter EV driving a dream.

“Electric cars are way more noise-sensitive compared with a combustion car,” said Out of Spec Media’s Kyle Conner, who tests EVs for tens of thousands of miles every year. “Having the foam inside the tire makes a world of difference. It’s really night and day.”

SilentDrive Technology is the latest in a long line of electric vehicle tire innovations from Nokian Tyres. Way back in 2012, we set the world record for fastest EV on ice.

What is the Nokian Tyres Electric Fit emblem?

In 2014, we released the first winter tire produced with EVs and hybrids in mind, the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta R2. And as of last year, every all season, all weather and winter tire we make is tested on, and developed for, electric vehicles. The latest generations of our tires come with the Electric Fit emblem that signifies they’re seamless fits for EVs.

Electric vehicles need tires that help keep noise levels low, but that’s only the start. Their heavier weights and quick acceleration mean tires have to withstand larger loads and more intense torque – all while delivering an efficient driving experience that gets the most out of each charge.

There’s little point in buying electric vehicles without also seeking tires designed to unlock their benefits. Nokian Tyres recommends tires that are tailored to handle EVs’ weight, noise levels, torque and range requirements. The result: a supercharged driving experience and low rolling resistance.
