Factory in Oradea, Romania
World’s first zero CO2 emission tire factorY
We are building the world’s first zero CO2 emission tire factory in Oradea, Romania. A world-class manufacturing facility in Europe is a key step in getting additional manufacturing capacity. For Nokian Tyres, it is one of the most important strategic projects of the near future.
Key facts
This is how we achieve zero CO2 emissionS
The Nokian Tyres Oradea factory is the world's first full-scale zero CO2 emission tire factory. At the factory, no energy generated by fossil fuels is used. This enables the whole factory to operate with zero CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2).
This is achieved through a combination of solutions.
All electricity used at the Romania Oradea factory is CO2 emission free. Part of the electricity used in the factory is generated by on-site solar power units. We have also signed a long-term contract with renewable energy provider Enery to ensure zero CO2 emission energy for the factory.
Steam used to cure the tires is generated by innovative electric boilers which use fully CO2 emission free electricity instead of the usual fossil fuels. In addition, the tire manufacturing process is very energy efficient as we are only utilizing the most modern technology and machinery.
The zero CO2 emission level will be verified in connection with the Sustainability Statement 2025. 2025 is the first full year of commercial production.
WE CARE FOR THE SHARED WORLD WE ALL DRIVE IN

Oradea, the home of our new factory
Many factors contributed that Romania and the town of Oradea was selected as the location of our new factory from over 40 options. We found a site large enough to serve a scalable manufacturing footprint with green energy sources available near the site. The area has a stable business environment and educated workforce and is close to our customer base via rail and highway and it serves as an important regional and European hub of many transport routes. It is also a strong automotive manufacturing hub in Europe.
The total investment of the greenfield factory is estimated to be approximately EUR 650 million, which is among the most valuable investments in Romania in the recent years. The greenfield factory is being built in the North-West of Romania in the city of Oradea, an important regional and European hub of many transport routes.
