Meet the Hakkapeliitta 01
The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 01 is a studded winter tire with On-Demand Grip. Its Double Action Stud Technology automatically changes how firmly the studs contact the road as conditions change: stronger stud contact for ice and snow, and gentler contact on bare roads. It is built for passenger cars, crossovers and SUVs, including electric vehicles.

What is On-Demand Grip?
On-Demand Grip is the Hakkapeliitta 01 system that automatically adapts stud contact to changing winter roads. An adaptive base compound supports two operating states, called Studmode ON and Studmode OFF. The driver does not activate a switch; the material response happens automatically as road-surface conditions change.
Studmode ON: grip for ice and snow
In colder conditions, the adaptive compound stiffens to support the studs, increasing stud contact for grip on ice and snow.
Studmode OFF: gentler contact on bare roads
As temperatures rise, the adaptive compound softens and allows the studs to sit deeper in the tread. On bare roads, this provides more precise contact with less road wear and lower noise.

From retractable-stud concept to production tire
Nokian Tyres first presented a retractable-stud concept in 2014. The Hakkapeliitta 01 brings the underlying idea into production through a temperature-responsive compound rather than a driver-operated mechanical system. Development required the stud, tread and base compound to work together across changing winter surfaces.
What changed from the Hakkapeliitta 10?
Compared with its predecessor, Nokian Tyres reports the following results for the Hakkapeliitta 01:
