How Nokian Tyres’ Driving Safety Indicator Works

Tire tread depth can make a difference in driving safety. Learn how Nokian Tyres' Driving Safety Indicator helps you easily determine tire tread depth.

When it comes to driving safety, tire tread depth can make a huge difference. Proper tread ensures your tires can grip the road, channel away water, and help you stop quickly when it matters most. But how do you know when it’s time to replace your tires?

That’s where our Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) comes in handy.

What is the Driving Safety Indicator?

The DSI is a unique feature that is molded directly into the tread of all Nokian Tyres’ latest products. Rather than guessing how much tread remains, or relying on a coin test, the DSI gives you a clear, easy-to-read number on your tires. It’s one of the several advanced tire safety tips we’ve developed to give you peace of mind on every journey.

How to Use the Driving Safety Indicator

Once you’ve located the Driving Safety Indicator on your tires, you’ll see percentages in the tread pattern. When your tires are new, all percentages will be visible (100, 80, 60, and 40). As the tire wears down, the numbers will gradually disappear. For example, when 80% disappears, it means that 20% of the tread has been worn away, leaving 80% of usable tread.

Here’s an easy guide to follow when determining your tires’ remaining tread life, confirmed by our tire wear recommendations:

  • 100% to 80%: Tire is essentially new, with maximum grip and safety.
  • 60%: Still safe, but wear becomes more noticeable.
  • 40% You’re approaching the limit! When driving in wet or winter conditions, this is when we recommend replacing your tires.
  • 20% or below: Time to replace! Driving with little to no tread can compromise your safety on the road.

Why Tread Depth Matters

Knowing your tread depth helps you get the most out of your tires without sacrificing safety. A simple look at the Driving Safety Indicator tells you whether it’s time to keep rolling with confidence or start planning for a new set.

At Nokian Tyres, our goal is simple: to make your driving experience safer, smarter, and more sustainable. The Driving Safety Indicator is just one small way we do that.
