Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 - High End Winter Tires!

Just a quick note about these 285/45/21 R5 tires I put on my 2023 Audi Q8. I griped about the cost and yeah they are expensive, but dang they are worth it so far. Really quiet and I mean as quiet as the summer tires they replaced. Great cornering where I don’t feel the side wall flexing but it doesn’t give me the feeling they are clumsy or blocky; with smooth tracking that doesn’t tend to wander around with every furrow in our wonderful roads. The real test, of course, will be when it snows, but if they are anything like the R3’s I previously had on our SQ5, I have all the confidence they will perform better than most winter, studless tires.

Awesome winter tires

These tires have made it so my Ford Focus doesn’t slide all over the road in slush and snow. I was able to drive at reasonably safe speeds on snowy roads without having to worry about driving too slow just to be safe and creating traffic due to underperforming tires.

Best ever ice and snow tires

It made my Volvo S40 take our icy hill as if it were a different car altogether, climbing the snow covered ice like it was a 4-wheel drive Safari truck. Unbelievable.

Consistently Excellent

I first discovered these tires back in 2001 when I moved to Northern Europer (EVERYONE uses Nokian Tyres winter tires there). In 2012 I moved back to Canada and the first thing I did was buy some Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta snow tires. I'm on my 3rd set so far, and definitely these snow tires have served me EXTREMELY WELL over the past decade of Canadian winters!

PURE ECO-FRIENDLINESS

Starting from the material selection, the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta R5 has been designed to leave a smaller carbon footprint. Our Green Trace compound offers excellent winter grip, better mileage, and low rolling resistance. The large amount of natural rubber keeps the compound flexible under all conditions. Low rolling resistance generates fuel savings and cuts down on harmful emissions. More than one third of the materials in the compound are renewable and recycled.

Impeccable ice grip

Arctic Grip Crystals. Microscopic, third-generation grip crystals are mixed in the tread rubber. These crystals work like built-in studs, creating sharp, tough grip edges inside the rubber. As the tire wears down, the crystals emerge and activate the grip reserve.

Superior grip and handling

Double Block Grip design offers superior grip and handling, which can be seen especially on the shoulder areas of the tire. The stiff row of tread blocks starts from the center and is split in two moving towards the shoulder area. Compared to its predecessor, the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta R5 has 40% more tread blocks on the shoulder and intermediate area. This increase means that the contact area has more rubber touching the surface, which results in better grip on slippery surfaces.

Safe and green mobility

Hakkapeliitta R5 is a durable, comfortable and extremely energy efficient winter tire. Lighter rolling saves fuel and extends the range of electric vehicles. Due to the lightly rolling tread design and the Green Trace compound, the rolling resistance of the Hakkapeliitta R5 has been improved even further. The eco-friendly driving features come from ingredients like natural rubber, recycled steel, plant derived oils and pine resin. More than one third of the compound consists of renewable and recycled materials.

Patented safety

Our patented Winter Safety Indicator (WSI) is embedded in the tread to further improve safety. It displays the remaining tread in millimeters together with a snowflake symbol. The snowflake remains visible until four millimeters of tread remain. Once the snowflake has worn out, purchasing new winter tires is recommended to help ensure driving stays safe.
