For Nokian Tyres, keeping pace with a changing world is a necessity. To master ever-changing weather conditions and a constantly evolving world, we’ve had to reinvent safety time and time again.

The first time we revolutionized road safety was in 1934 when we developed the world's first winter tire. At the same time, we defined the direction of the tire industry far into the future. And on that journey, we still tread. Inspired by our heritage, we are set to keep ahead of the curve for the next 90 years too.

The world's first winter tire was introduced

The pioneer for winter tires was the Kelirengas, introduced for trucks in 1934. Two years later, in 1936, were produced the first winter tires for passenger cars: the new Hakkapeliittas. The winter tire had a special, safe tread pattern that helped even winter-shy motorists get on the road.

Today's winter tires offer first-class safety

The world's first studded winter tire

Road traffic entered an era of motorways and asphalt and road safety in winter was a hot topic of discussion. In 1965 Nokian Tyres introduced the first studded winter tire, Hakkapeliitta, which was the first winter tire specially designed for studding.

Next generation of safety with Hakkapeliitta 10

The world's first winter tire designed for snowy & bare roads

In the 1990s, winter driving often involved a lot of highway travel, making it the right time for a non-studded winter tire designed for bare roads. The non-studded option of the 1996 Hakkapeliitta series, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta NRW 1, was a new-generation non-studded tire that improved the tire’s wet grip and wear resistance at the same time.

The world's first retractable studded tire was introduced

Leading the way in safety means being innovative. In 2014, Nokian Tyres introduced a non-studded concept tire with studs that can be activated at the push of a button. This allows for using best features of studded and non-studded tires, depending on the weather. This concept tire, though not available to consumers, has paved the way for future studded winter tire technology.

The world's first double-stud winter tire

Hakkapeliitta 9 was the first winter tire with two different studs: a tailored stud for the center of the tread and a separate stud for the shoulder areas. This functional stud concept supports a wide stud distribution that reinforces grip and lowers rolling noise. Popular Science magazine chose Nokian Tyres’ Hakkapeliitta 9 for its 2017 Best of What’s New Award.

A big step toward a historic sustainability goal

For decades, Nokian Tyres has been striving to make the world a safer place. In 2022, the Nokian Tyres Green Step concept tire was introduced. It's a masterpiece of sustainable innovation with an ambitious design made up of 93% recycled or renewable materials. It moves the company even closer to its goal of using 50% recycled or renewable raw materials in its tires by 2030.
