Are your tires truly ready to handle the worst winter conditions? The ice grip symbol aims to instill confidence that you’re good to go. Learn more about it and how it relates to our products.
What Nokian Tyres products have the ice grip symbol?
You can find the ice grip symbol on the sidewalls of our latest-generation winter tires, the studded Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 and non-studded Hakkapeliitta R5. It certifies they have been subjected to rigorous testing on icy surfaces, according to standards established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

When was the ice grip symbol introduced to the tire industry?
While the symbol was established in 2021, people are really starting to talk about it.
“The new ice-grip symbol on winter tires separates what delivers excellent traction for acceleration in snow from what's also good at slowing down on ice,” writes Car and Driver. “We noticed the new ice grip symbol first on Nokian Tyres’ Hakkapeliitta R5 studless snow tires.”
“Most gearheads are familiar with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, a mark which denotes which tires have passed an industry standard for traction when tested in appropriately wintery conditions,” writes The Truth About Cars. “If you’re a leader in one’s field like Nokian, you go for an even tougher designation [or both] – the new Ice Grip symbol.”
The Hakkapeliitta R5 as of 2024 features the Ice Grip emblem on the left, and 3PMSF on the right.
How does a tire qualify for the ice grip symbol?
To receive the ice grip symbol, a tire has to perform at least 18 percent better than a standard reference tire on an ice braking test. The test is performed by an independent laboratory. Multiple tiremakers came together to establish the standard in coordination with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
