What are all season tires and are they right for you?
Nokian Tyres all season tires provide safe, sustainable performance and offer reliable grip, efficiency and handling on dry, wet and slick North American roads. All season tires are a good choice for drivers who live in warmer regions where there is moderate rainfall and very mild winters - if any winter at all. For drivers who live in areas that receive consistent or heavy snow in the winters, we recommend a set of all weather tires or winter tires.

Driving is safe, economical, and comfortable when you choose the right all season tires for your vehicle. When selecting tires, consider factors such as tire size, tire markings, and other characteristics of new tires.
Vehicle type
The size and intended use of the vehicle naturally affect the selection of the right all season tire. Passenger car tires do not experience the same kind of load as, for example, van, SUV, light truck, or heavy-duty industrial vehicle tires. Owners of electric or hybrid vehicles should also consider the vehicle's greater weight and power.
Tire sidewall markings
Tire sidewall markings help determine the size, load capacity, and speed rating of the all season tire. In addition, tire sidewall markings should help you make the right tire choice at tire shops. By following the markings on tires, you can find safe, quiet, and economical all season tires for your passenger car, SUV, light truck, or commercial vehicle. For example, you can find out the age of a tire from the markings on its sidewall (read more about tire age below). The first two digits indicate the week of the tire's manufacture, and the last two digits indicate the year of manufacture. Learn more about the numbers and markings on a tire’s sidewall here.
Tire size
All season tires must be compatible with your vehicle. You can find the recommended tire size for your vehicle in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Recommend tire size is often listed within the vehicle’s doorjamb, as well.
Tread depth
The tread depth of all season tires has a significant impact on the tires' grip and performance, especially when driving on wet roads. Tire tread depth in the United States is measured in 32nds of an inch. The tread depth of brand new all season tires is approximately 10/32 to 11/32 inches (8 to 9 mm), but the tire wears out over time. As the tire wears out, its grip decreases, and its driving characteristics deteriorate. When the tread depth of an all season tire is below 5/32 inch (4 mm), the risk of hydroplaning on wet roads is significantly higher than in well-maintained tires. It is recommended by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Government of Canada that tires should be replaced when they reach 2/32 inches (1.5 mm).
According to regulations, the tread depth of all season tires must be at least 2/32 inches (1.5 mm). After this, the tires must be replaced with new ones. However, it is not advisable to wait until the last minute and drive the tires to the end. Tires with tread depths less than 2/32 inches (1.5 mm) can also be a reason for rejection during a car inspection.
Tire Age
Even if the tires on your car have not worn out and still have some tread depth left, they begin to lose their properties after a certain point. If the tire is completely unused, a quality all season tire can still be used for up to 5 years after their manufacture. After this, the recommended maximum lifespan of all season tires is 6 years. The overall age of an all season tire indicates the number of years since its manufacture. All season tires with an overall age of more than 10 years should be replaced with new ones.
As a tire ages, its rubber compound begins to harden, and the tire is no longer as safe on the road. The aging and wear of tires are also affected, for example, by how much they have been driven over the years, how they have been stored, and how well they have been taken care of. Premature wear of both all season and winter tires can be prevented by driving with the correct tire pressure and changing the tires' position every time they are changed.
You can find out the age of a tire from the markings on its sidewall. The first two digits indicate the week of the tire's manufacture, and the last two digits indicate the year of manufacture.
